CIVILIAN/SCAVENGER/TRADER


SUMMARY
This category is your average dumpster diving post-apocalyptic Jane/Joe. This character type is very run-of-the-mill, often suffering from malnutrition, and therefore does not receive the full complement of Attribute dots. The GM can distribute additional dots based on the character type-for example, doctors will likely have higher Intelligence and a trader might have more in Manipulation. NPCs should also receive two to three dots in a fitting specialty: medicine for doctors, academics for teachers, animal ken for farmers, etc. Even for those predisposed to violence, few will want to start a fight unless they outnumber a party or can seize an immediate advantage, and they're more interested in bartering than brawling. Aggressive types may carry a small firearm or knife.

CURATOR/KEEPER


SUMMARY
Curators and Keepers of the Flame share similar attributes; they're highly educated, very intelligent, and eager to acquire electronics, though for different reasons. While they are generally peaceful, they will take great risks to acquire a coveted piece of technology or historical artifact. They would rather stick to the shadows and avoid conflict altogether; they can also be accompanied by armed mercenary guards to help them do their bidding.

BANDITS of the HOOD


SUMMARY
Bandits of the Hood are masters of guerrilla warfare, striking hard and fast from the shadows and quickly disappearing. They will stalk their prey patiently keeping out of sight. While they will try to obtain Common and Uncommon electronics Items peaceably, they will attack and try to destroy advanced technology, forfeiting their lives if necessary. While they tolerate Curators and Keepers of the Flame (some renegade Bandits even serve as guards), their anti-technology stance often places them at odds. Their arch-enemies, however, are the MPD and elite class of post-apocalyptic survivors hoarding valuable resources behind their protected walls.

HORSEMEN/MPD/GUARDS


SUMMARY
This group of stock characters are 100% trouble: they are well-armed and well-trained and aren't afraid to flex their muscles. They carry valuable weapons and armor; they're not keen on talking and will resort to violence as a means to solving most problems. What separates them is their motivation:
  • Horsemen of the Apocalypse are sociopaths who want to eradicate the last remnants of humanity. They will attack on-sight even against long odds and will only attempt to retreat when death seems inevitable; they're psychotic but not suicidal and would rather live to fight another day rather than perish at the feet of some cretin.
  • Guards/Mercenaries have found a sponsor who employs them as security. Guards and mercenaries will only attack if their patron (or their possessions) are under threat and may engage in banter or small talk; some might even hold valuable bits of information, and they're not above bribes... if you can make it worth their while.
  • The MPD are tougher nuts than the typical guard or mercenary. Unlike guards who protect storekeepers, those who employ the MPD don't need customers. As a result, the MPD don't need to be nice to strangers and won't be eager to talk; they might take a swing with a billy club or fire a warning shot to scare off cowards. If you persist in bugging them or show any signs of getting around them, they'll open up without question. Considering they're being compensated by rich folks, they're hard to bribe but not impossible.
